Wade Meachum handing off a pigeon to Ellerbe student

On Thursday, April 12, students at Ellerbe Middle School had the opportunity to attend multiple Wildcat Career Day sessions where they listened and interacted with presenters.

Former EMS Wildcat, Sen. Tom McInnis, started the morning off with a motivational speech, encouraging each student to choose a career that they will enjoy. Sudents were then placed in their groups, and presenters shared information about their chosen passion and the pathway that lead each of them to their success.

A number of presenters were in attendance, ranging from architecture to lineman, pediatrician to psychotherapist, veterinarian to dog trainer, and nurse to former Super Bowl champion. Each of these presentations positively impact our students by providing various aspects of these careers.

Raider Cadet shakes the hand of Principal, Jim Butler

Junior ROTC Cadets, NCO’s (Non-Commissioned Officers), and other invited guests gathered at the Cole Auditorium on the evening of March 26 for the annual Raider Battalion Dining In.

Earlier this month, the Raider Battalion celebrated 46 years of tradition and rich history as cadets were pinned with the first ever Raider Unit Crest. Each crest features ocean waves, the telescope used for navigating, the arm of community workers, the torch of truth and triumph, and an open book for continued knowledge. During the formal event, Raider cadets could be seen in their Army Service Uniforms (ASU), giving them the chance to show off the newly appointed crest, representing the green and gold like never before.

In the past, former cadets may have participated in what is known as the military ball. However, the dining-in tradition is slightly different and used throughout history to celebrate great battles and feats of heroes by formal ceremony. Different companies or units gather to socialize, participate in activities such as the receiving line, and share a formal dining experience.

Cadets and instructors upheld these long-standing traditions by appointing the Raider Color Guard to post the colors of our flags, having guests participate in the punch bowl ceremony, and the long-established military toast to the President of the United States, Richmond Senior High, the Raider Battalion, and guests, as well as a tribute to our fallen comrades. Those in attendance also witnessed the Command Sergeant Major Change of Responsibility Ceremony and Battalion Change of Command.

Cameron McDonald signing his commitment, family, and Methodist representatives.

Cameron McDonald, a senior at Richmond Senior High School has fully committed to Methodist University in hopes of continuing his career in music this fall.

McDonald was presented a full tuition music scholarship on Friday, March 23 during a surprise gathering with two Methodist University representatives, other RSHS choir members, family and friends. Representatives spoke about his love of music, hard work, and the audition piece played on March 14 that landed him the $130,000 scholarship.

Throughout his time within Richmond County Schools, McDonald has served the arts in many capacities. He plays the trumpet for the Raider Concert Band and the drums for the Raider Marching Band, sang with the Richmond Senior High Vocal Ensemble, experienced two years of guitar class, and assisted as a choir mentor. Outside of school, McDonald also participates in piano classes and his church choir, and even led the guitar class at the 2017 Winter Gala, held at the Cole Auditorium.

We would like to wish Cameron the best of luck as he pursues his dreams as a Monarch.

Kindness Matters Presentation by Rockingham Middle School 6th Grade Chorus

On Tuesday, March 20, 2018, the Sixth Grade Chorus & The 3 O'Clockers of Rockingham Middle School gave a special presentation to those in the audience.

"Kindness Matters," was the theme of the evening as the young singers graced the stage in their bright teal shirts. After opening with Wooly Bully by Sam Samudio, an array of songs such as, Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield, Nowhere Man by Lennon & McCartney, and the classic, Lean On Me by Bill Withers, had the crowd swaying as they listened.

The 3 O'Clockers finished the evening with You Will Be Found, a song well known for its touching lyrics in the original Broadway production, Dear Evan Hansen.

Choral Director, Lauren Lutz has been working with the students to help spread the word about the importance of being kind and finding their voice. Lutz has also emphasized the use of voices as a means to inform others about the Kindness Matters project, an anti-bullying initiative at Rockingham Middle School.
