It’s Summer Vacation, but that doesn’t mean all RCS students are simply taking it easy!

For 16 Cadets, two instructors, and a chaperon of the Richmond Senior High JROTC “Raider Battalion,” the train kept rolling all the way to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, as they experienced a week of challenge during this year's summer camp.

“When I say there was no time to rest, I mean - there was no time to rest," said Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Jon Ring, the Senior Army Instructor.  "This same group of Cadets supported graduation on the evening of June 10th and then were back at school to load a bus as the sun came up on the 11th.  We didn't slow down again until we returned to Richmond Senior on the 17th.”

Talk about an exciting homecoming! Jim Butler will be the first Raider graduate to serve as Richmond Senior High School’s principal.

Effective July 1st, Butler will once again walk the halls of Richmond Senior where he’s “looking to continue the good things that are going on as well as bring a few new ideas” to his alma mater.

A 1982 RSHS grad, Butler continued his educational studies, earning a Bachelor’s Degree from University of North Carolina at Pembroke as well as his Master’s from East Carolina University.

Congratulations to Richmond Senior High School’s Mikel Patrick!  The recent graduate received a $2,000 scholarship from the Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation last Thursday, June 9th.

Specifically, Patrick received the REACH Educational Grant, a competitive scholarship that helps KFC employees pursue their educational dreams by providing college tuition assistance.

Now that’s what we call a big cabbage!  L.J. Bell 3rd Grader Michael Barbee has been growing his plant for the last few months, and now it weighs a whopping 17 lbs. 4 ounces.

Measuring 40 inches in circumference and 13.5 inches in diameter, his leafy green will be entered into the Bonnie Plants’ 3rd Grade Cabbage Program.

Each year Bonnie Plants gives students the opportunity to grow and earn some green, as each “Best in State” colossal cabbage winner receives a $1,0000 scholarship.

After learning about plants at school, Barbee grew his own cabbage in a raised bed of compost soil.  After months of watering it with the soaker hose and checking for weeds, he hopes his cabbage wins.

Barbee may have harvested his cabbage on June 1st buy says that certainly won’t be the last time you find him planting.

“I’m helping my pop with the rest of the garden,” said Barbee.  “Along with my uncle, we’re growing vegetables in the raised beds and corn fields.”

Richmond Senior High School’s Class of 2017 could be creating a new tradition when it comes to turning their tassels.

After years of honoring RSHS graduates on Friday evening, the district is considering moving the ceremony to Saturday morning.

Therefore, on Thursday, June 2nd the parents of all rising Richmond Senior High School 10th, 11th and 12th Graders will be receiving a SchoolConnects phone call asking for their opinion about the graduation process starting in 2017.
