Talk about your hands on approach to history!

After learning about events that lead to war, Miss Washington’s Richmond Senior High Schoolers went on their own American Revolution GooseChase Scavenger Hunt.

Richmond County’s home to three model middle schools according to the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform.  Both Ellerbe and Rockingham Middle School have newly joined the ranks of National Schools to Watch, a distinction Hamlet Middle School’s held since 2013.

“Being a National School to Watch doesn’t mean you’re perfect, but it shows you have innovative ideas in place that better the lives and education of your students,” said Ellerbe Middle School Principal Melvin Ingram.

The program recognizes high-performing middle schools that exhibit excellent performance on a written application and in-person visit.

The distinction is not something earned overnight.  Ellerbe Middle School’s journey began back in 2008, with Rockingham’s starting soon afterward.

Its criteria includes being academically excellent, developmentally responsible, sensitive to the challenges of early adolescence as well as socially equitable by providing every student with high-quality teachers, resources and support.

east rock

The term “dress for success” has never looked so good.

Each Wednesday, 31 East Rockingham Elementary students don crisp white shirts and bowties for Boys 2 Men, a club that teaches 3rd thru 5th Graders the power of politeness.

Wess Futrell, the school’s music teacher, came across the idea last May when he was trying to think of creative ways to teach his students life lessons and leadership skills. So, when students returned to the classroom for the 2016-2017 school year, he had teachers pick two boys from each 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade homeroom.

Although there are no specific qualifications necessary to be in Boys 2 Men Futrell said “it’s geared to helping those who may not have another male role model in their life.”
