Catherine Kinsey certainly has a green thumb!  The L.J. Bell 3rd Grader recently grew a cabbage weighing 10 lbs. 5 ounces.

Kinsey’s class learned about plants in school.  And, as part of their studies, each student then had the opportunity to participate in the Bonnie Plants’ 3rd Grade Cabbage Program.

Each year Bonnie Plants gives students the opportunity to grow and earn some green, as each “Best in State” colossal cabbage winner receives a $1,0000 scholarship.

After months of watering it daily, checking for weeds and packing it with straw, Kinsey’s hoping her cabbage can take top honors here in North Carolina.

Kinsey harvested her cabbage on May 25th but says that won’t be her last time planing.

“My Papa has a garden,” said Kinsey.  “And, I like to help him a lot.”

Talk about bringing history to life!

Our Hamlet Middle School 8th Graders  are reading actual handwritten letters with their original envelopes from Vietnam Veterans.

Soldiers wrote these letter to their family member.  And, they give our students a glimpse as to what they went through and how they felt while engaged in war.
