Each month, Richmond County Schools’ Board of Education recognizes two special individuals who exude excellence.  For April, Monroe Avenue’s Mrs. Kimberly Pence and Teresa McLaughlin were  selected.

kim pence

Mrs. Pence teaches 5th Grade Science and Social Studies to our favorite group of Tigers.  Serving the students of Monroe Avenue for over 20 year, she puts her kiddos and their well being first in everything she does.

In fact, according to her principal, Mrs. Dawn Terry, Kim’s “a cheerleader for our school and always strives for excellence.  With her positive attitude and high expectations, it’s obvious she believes in our students."

mclaughlin

For 10 years, Ms. McLaughlin’s served the students of Monroe Avenue as a school custodian and bus driver.  She executes all tasks with a happy, here to help attitude and has a true heart for the school’s  students and staff members.

“Teresa knows all of our students and cares about them as individuals,” said Mrs. Terry.   “She believes building those strong relationships is a key part of her position.”

Plus, she's always quick to join in on Monroe Avenue's Dress Up Days, whether they be Crazy Socks, Silly Hair or even Green Eggs and Ham Day.

For these reasons and many more, we're quite pleased to present these two ladies with RCS's Inspiring Excellence Award.

ingram

With books stacked on nearly every surface, Joanetta Ingram’s classroom is a reader’s paradise.

And, it’s her West Rockingham Elementary School 2nd Graders who are the greatest benefactors.

With over 10 years of teaching experience, Ingram understands the importance of increasing a child’s reading achievement.  But, thanks to her UNC Pembroke Reading Education Masters Program, she’s looking at things a bit differently now.

Ingram was recently tasked with finding a need at her school as part of a leadership project.  So, she sent a survey to see how many books each student actually had at their home.

“Several didn’t have too many,” explained Ingram.  “But, I knew getting books in their houses and parents involved reading with them could be huge.”

So what did Ingram do?  She took to DonorsChoose.org, a website that allows people from all over the globe to directly donate to public school classrooms and the projects that inspire their students.

Please be reminded that, according to the district calendar, tomorrow, Thursday, March 23rd is a Staff Development Day.

Students should not report to school unless they attend Richmond Early College or Richmond Senior High School.

Richmond Senior High Schoolers will be making up one of the days missed this week.

Care is being taken to follow all guidelines regarding Richmond Senior High School’s bat removal process.  Safety is always our top priority.

Therefore, Richmond Senior High School will remain closed on Wednesday, March 22nd.

The JROTC Formal Dining In, which is being held at the Cole Auditorium, and all athletic events will still occur

Both the Early College and the Ninth Grade Academy will operate on their normal schedule.  And like today, those students who attend first or fourth block at Richmond Senior High School will remain at their home campus tomorrow.

Additionally, here's a bit more information regarding the JROTC Formal Dining In...

Although school is cancelled for tomorrow, the Richmond Senior High School Military Dining In will proceed as planned.  The event will be held at the Cole Auditorium on Richmond Community College’s campus.

Please be reminded that this is a graded event.  Therefore, all cadets are expected to attend.  All LET3s, LET4s and other cadets assigned key tasks should arrive no later than 4:00 PM.  All other cadets and invited guests should plant to arrive no later than 6:00 PM.  The Dinning In will conclude at 9:00 PM, so please make transportation plans as required.

Richmond County Schools works hard to keep its stakeholders informed of any information vital for our students’ well being.  Therefore, please note that Richmond Senior High School has been experiencing issues with bats.

There were no reports of any students near the bats; however, if you discover your child was in contact with one while on campus, please call the Richmond County Health Department at (910) 997-8301.

“Tommy Jarrell and his staff at the Health Department met with us at the high school have been very helpful though this process,” said Richmond County Schools’ Superintendent, Dr. Cindy Goodman.

There’s no reason to believe the bats sited at Richmond Senior High School are diseased.  But, to err on the side of safety, parents should question their children about any possible contact.

In regards to Richmond Senior High School’s bat removal process, care is being taken to follow all guidelines.  The district is working with an animal removal specialist, and all entry points are being sealed off with a bat valve.  The valve makes it so that future entries are no longer possible.

The process is expected to take about a day.  Therefore, Richmond Senior will not be having school tomorrow, Tuesday, March 21st.

Both the Early College and the Ninth Grade Academy will be returning to their regular schedules.  However, those students who attend first or fourth block at Richmond Senior High School will remain at their home campus tomorrow.

Additionally, because school will not be in session, there will be no ACT makeup exam for Richmond Senior High Schoolers.

kyle goodwinEach summer, high schoolers from across the country spend a week in Washington, D.C. as part of the National Rural Electric Youth Tour.  And, this June, Richmond Senior High School 10th Grader Kyle Goodwin will be one of them.

Having won the Pee Dee Electric competition, Goodwin will receive an all-expenses paid, week-long tour of the nation's capital.  While there, he'll not only have the chance to network alongside a group of talented peers and grow his own leadership skills but also connect with members of North Carolina's congressional delegation.
