Congratulations to Richmond Senior High School’s, Maggie Chambers.  The Junior was recently named April’s Beta of the Month.  During the State Convention held this February, Chambers placed first in the Oratory Competition, eloquently speaking in front of hundreds of BETAs from across North Carolina.

In addition to being a member of the Beta Club, she is active in the National Honor Society, the African American History Club, and IDFY. Chambers too is a member of Teen Court, an organization that allows students to run trials for other teens found guilty of low-level criminal charges.  Additionally, she participates in the Page Program where she assists State Senators and their staff during the legislative session.

Chambers has also been asked to speak at several Board of Education meetings as well as Ellerbe Middle School assemblies.  And, in her spare time, she volunteers at Our Daily Bread, Relay for Life, and the Richmond County Community Theater.

Additionally, she was also nominated for Project Uplift and Governor’s School. And, through these programs, will spend her summer  experiencing the academic rigor and social climate of college with other gifted high schoolers.

It's almost time for Richmond Senior High School's Class of 2029 to register for Kindergarten.

Please be reminded that, for rising Kindergarteners, parents must provide:

The Child: Registration cannot be completed unless the child accompanies the parent or guardian. The child must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. It’s very important that the child comes for the registration process.

Proof of Birth

Immunization Record: Immunizations are available by appointment at the Richmond County Health Department from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Fridays. After 30 days, students who do not have all of their immunization requirements will be suspended from school per North Carolina law.

North Carolina Health Assessment: According to North Carolina law, every child entering kindergarten in the public schools must receive a health assessment. The health assessment must be made no more than 12 months prior to the date of school entry. No child may attend kindergarten unless a health assessment transmittal form, indicating that the child has received the health assessment, is presented to the school principal. The parent, guardian, or responsible person has 30 calendar days from the first day of attendance to present the required health assessment form for the child. After the 30 days, those students who do not have a completed health assessment on file will be suspended from school per North Carolina law.

Proof of Residency: Two (2) different examples needed: Examples include a recent utility bill (including electric, gas, water, sewer, and cable), rent receipt or property tax receipt.

Just before Spring Break, Ashley Chapel Educational Center held its first ever Spelling Bee Contest!

The competition was divided into two categories, 7th-9th Grade and 10th-12th Grade.  And, each word the spellers had dealt with the business industry.

Congratulations go to Victor Kyle Pore and  Tyliya Juanera Nelson.  As the school victors, both students received a $50 cash prize and food certificates from Arby's and Bojangles

Richmond County Schools is getting ready to launch a new electronic flyer communication tool called Peachjar.  Beginning in May, you’ll be able to view school-approved e-flyers by either email or simply clicking the Peachjar button on your school’s website homepage.

This green initiative will save our schools tons of paper and reduce copy costs by thousands of dollars.

That being said, our school needs an email address for each student’s custodial parent/guardian to send school information electronically.

Please support this effort by confidentially sharing your email address.

Your information is secure and will only be used to send you school-approved communication.

How does hunting for 750 Easter Eggs sound?  Well, for the 83 West Rockingham Elementary students who met their Accelerated Reader Goals for the month of February, that was recently their reality!

On March 11th, students from Kindergarten-5th Grade participated in the school’s mega egg hunt and hat contest.

With his Easter Basket inspired hat, Devan Harrington took top honors in the K-2 category, while Brooklyn Benton’s giant, Easter Cake creation won amongst the 3rd-5th Graders.

Congratulations to our West Rockingham winners, and keep reading!

Before students complete Kindergarten they're required to know 100 sight words.

Well, at West Rockingham Elementary School, three have more than exceeded the challenge.

Kindergarteners Chris Lane and Drew Greene along with 1st Grader Emberlie Strickland are part of the school's 1,000 Word Club.

"I'm extremely proud of them," said West Rockingham's Principal, Willette Surgeon.  "They've done an awesome job, and when other students see them, they're pushed to learn their Fry words as well."

The Fry Word List is widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing.  Especially for new readers, it's important to instantly recognize the words to build their reading fluency and meaningful context sills.

"It's important that we know these words so we can learn and go to college," said Chris Lane.

Drew Greene agreed, adding that he learned his words by "practicing them at night then coming back to school and getting them all right."

Now that Greene, Lane and Strickland have mastered the ten levels, the trio encourages their classmates to keep studying and learn their words as well.

You were already going to participate in the Saturday, April 16th Run for the Ribbons 5K and Family Fun 1K right?  Well, now the three schools with the most participants will earn money! To qualify, all you'll need to do is fill in your school on the line designated Team Name.
