One teacher at each of Richmond County's 14 schools will receive $1,000 to fund creative classroom projects through the Richmond County Schools Education Foundation's Empowering Educators grant.

The foundation reviewed more than 35 applications from local educators proposing projects in sustainability, engineering, cultural exploration, literacy and emotional wellness. The range of ideas demonstrates how teachers across the district are finding new ways to connect academic concepts to real-world skills and student needs.

"The Empowering Educators grant is one of the most rewarding things our foundation does," said Kristi King, chair of the foundation. "Teachers know exactly what their students need, and these grants let them bring those ideas to life."

Among the funded projects are hybrid greenhouses where students will grow fruits, vegetables and herbs while learning about water conservation, nutrition and sustainable food systems. One teacher is creating “emotion-regulation toolkits” to help younger students identify and manage feelings, giving them concrete strategies for staying focused and engaged in the classroom.

Another project will transform recycled materials into a permanent collaborative art installation, teaching both artistic techniques and environmental responsibility. Other grants support engineering challenges that merge math and science through hands-on design work, outdoor learning spaces that extend education beyond four walls, and activities that bring N.C. cultural history to life through direct experience.

The diversity of proposals reflects both the creativity of Richmond County educators and their deep understanding of what will resonate with their specific students. Applications came from teachers across all grade levels and subject areas, each identifying a gap or opportunity where additional resources could make a meaningful difference.

“These grants let our teachers tackle challenges and opportunities they see every day in their classrooms," said Dr. Joe Ferrell, Richmond County Schools superintendent. "We appreciate the Education Foundation's ongoing investment in our educators and students."

Now in its second year, the Empowering Educators grant program is part of the foundation's broader work supporting teachers and students throughout Richmond County. The foundation also awards college scholarships to graduating seniors, recognizes outstanding staff members at the district's annual convocation, and co-hosts a New Teacher Mixer each fall to welcome educators new to the district with the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce.

Through these programs, the Richmond County Schools Education Foundation works to strengthen public education by investing directly in the educators and ideas that shape students' experiences every day. The Empowering Educators grant gives teachers the resources and flexibility to pursue innovative approaches tailored to their classrooms.

Grant recipients will implement their projects during the current school year, with many designed to have lasting impact beyond a single semester or group of students.
