THE PREVIOUS CALENDAR HAD MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 28 AS A STUDENT DAY. AS A RESULT, SEVERAL CHANGES WERE MADE. AUGUST 18 IS NOW A REQUIRED TEACHER WORKDAY, JANUARY 2 IS NOW A REGULAR SCHOOL DAY, AND THE THIRD, FOURTH, AND FIFTH SIX WEEKS END OF GRADING PERIOD DATES SHIFTED BACK ONE DAY.
WE ALSO SEEK TO INFORM STAKEHOLDERS THAT THE CALENDAR MAY CHANGE AGAIN IF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY'S PROPOSAL TO ADD FIVE INSTRUCTIONAL DAYS TO THE SCHOOL YEAR PASSES. WE WILL NOTIFY STAKEHOLDERS OF ANY CHANGES WE MAY NEED TO MAKE AT THAT TIME.
THESE CHANGES ARE NOT APPLICABLE TO RICHMOND EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL.
Schools Calendars 2011-12 School Year
Richmond County Schools petitioned employees, parents, students and community members for feedback on a proposal for a calendar for the upcoming 2011-12 school year. District leaders and Board members listened as the public responded.
Just under 500 responses were received through an online survey, most requesting that the school district remain on one calendar for all students. Several other stakeholders voices opinions through phone calls and emails to district leaders and board members.
The Richmond County Board of Education voted on March 1, 2011 to approve one calendar for all RCS students. Students will start school on August 25, 2011, and will finish school on June 7, 2012. Richmond Early College High will start school on August 4, 2011 and end school May 18, 2012.
North Carolina Calendar Law requires school systems to begin school on August 25 and end school prior to June 10. Students must be in school for 180 instructional days with a teacher workday provided at the end of each grading period. This leaves little flexibility for school districts in determining the school calendars each year.
